Sustainable Finance Forum - 5 October 2021

The last weeks brought along more technical and political inputs to the sustainability framework of the EU. The Expert Group report on EU Taxonomy extension (Environmental) and the EU Commission Q&A on SFDR set the tone for the go-live of these structural components of the framework in January 2022. The EU Social Taxonomy report as well as the report on the other Environmental goals sketch the picture of the EU economy sustainability change to come.

While many technical aspects still remain unclear or imprecise, the EU has only postponed the application date for SFDR Level 2 to 1 July 2022. No change in application date was done for the EU Taxonomy nor for the changes to the MiFID, Solvency, UCITS and AIFMD regimes to encompass sustainability and ESG matters. As such, the speed of change is still largely unchanged, in particular in light of the magnitude of change ongoing.

The market trends indicate anticipation of the regulatory changes to come. Both the inflow to sustainable and ESG funds skyrockets as well as the launch and conversion of existing funds to Art. 8 and Art. 9 standards. The competitive environment is changing fast making ESG the top priority to consider in the business strategy of all financial market participants in 2022.
